Lawn Pest Control

There are hundreds of insects found in your turf. Many of these insects are beneficial and it would be smart to keep them there. However, every insect becomes a pest if there are too many of them. Ticks, bees, ants, and other annoying pests like to make their home in your lawn. We provide safe insecticide treatments on your lawn to help fight these pests. Like our perimeter pest control program, this consists of 5 applications throughout the year, to prevent these pests from coming back. One treatment lasts about one month before rain and other weather conditions will start to wash away the treatment and another treatment will be applied.

Here are some examples of when you should use our lawn pest control program:

• Ants are destroying your lawn by making visible ant hills throughout your lawn.
• Ground bees are making your yard unsafe to play in as they continually make new nests in your lawn.
• Your dog or children have been affected by a tick from a nearby woods.

These are all examples of when our lawn pest control program would be beneficial. It is important to note that these applications should not only be made after a problem has occured. The best and most effective way to fight pests in your lawn is to put preventative treatments down on your lawn before the pest problem gets out of hand.

 

Some common pests in your lawn

In Michigan there are six pests that do the majority of the damage to your lawn.

Japanese Beetle

The Japanese Beetle is known to do the most damage. Japanese beetle grubs eat the roots of your lawn. This mainly happens in July when your lawn already has a lot of stress on is from the heat and lack of water. Usually when your lawn is infested with more than 40 Japanese beetles per square foot, parts of your lawn will die. Skunks and raccoons will also dig up your lawn to eat this beetles which causes even more damage.

European Chafer

European Chafers emerge before the Japanese beetle which would be around the June to early July timeframe. The European Chafer is more difficult to control than the Japanese Beetle, but if your lawn is infested with them, it is important to keep your lawn irrigated and to apply nematodes.

Black Ataneius

The Black Ataneius is not a very well known pest to homeowners, but it is a small black beetle that can significantly injure your turf. In order for significant damage to happen there needs to be at least 100 black ataneius per square foot which is much more than the action threshold of the Japanese Beetle. Black Ataneius damage is found mostly on golf courses and not homeowner’s lawns.

Hairy cinch Bug

If you have irregularly shaped yellow patches over your lawn, you most like have Hairy Cinch Bug infestation. Hairy Cinch bugs are very common in lawns but they are usually not prevalent enough to cause damage in well irrigated lawns. 

Bluegrass billbug

Many of the lawns in Grand Rapids, Michigan are composed of Kentucky Bluegrass. The Bluegrass billbug normally is found only in Kentucky Bluegrass lawns.  If you see the irregular dead patches of grass near burbs or side walks in late August it is most like the Bluegrass billbug.

 

Ants

Ants are more harmful to short grass like you see on golf courses, rather than nicely manicured lawns  Underneath your grass you have countless ant mounds. You do not see these ant mounds because your grass is cut high enough. Ants are actually beneficial to a homeowners lawn because it eats other insects pest larvae. However, sometimes Ants will make ant mounds large enough in residential lawns to warrant lawn pest control.
